With the heat and sun on the way it will be hard to find the nice cold veggies in the cool boxes. Getting the finds on the fresh days will have to be the new strategy as the the heat increases.
So I may have to retract what I had said before about meats. The thing is beggars can’t be choosers when it comes to diving and sometimes it’s hard to pass up on something so awesome! Last night a couple friends and I were diving some new spots and we found this glorious ham! Bone in and around a $40 price tag still on it. This thing was perfect! I contemplated for a bit as the packaging was a little odd with the vacuum seal being wrapped in a plastic bag, but then I saw that the ham was smoked which is my favorite so I had to take it. This thing is massive and delicious! I cooked a little up for breakfast with some nice bread we got last night as well. The sizzle and fat from this thing tastes like Canadian back bacon!
The other night I was fortunate enough to find some wonderful Greek yogurt that had been thrown out because the containers were bent in and didn’t keep up to the stores standards. They were awesome flavors of vanilla and coconut! Mixing them with some frozen blueberries that were found last week it became the best dumpster dessert I could ask for! Super fatty and flavorful to fill me up before bed. Thank you dumpster gods.
One big thing that we all need to realize when diving is that we are taking something that others make available to take. The owners of stores can easily lock their dumpsters and decide to let it all go to waste but they kindly choose not to. Keeping this in mind you should be aware of what you do around their stores and be respectful in the process. Clean up all and any mess you make around the dumpster. Basically just leave it the way you saw it, except for the treats you are taking home. If you abide by these good dumpster ethics then surely you will have a good relationship with the owners of the stores.
And speaking of treats last night a friend and I were able to score big with over 200 uncooked cookies that will keep well in a freezer!
Ingredients: 8 tomatoes, some basil, 1 small Zucchini, 2 peppers, half an onion and as many garlic cloves as you need.
All free, except for the handmade noodles.
The Winter is the best as the dumpster is basically a cool box for your food. Pick and choose what you like an leave the rest for someone else.

- 10 Purple Potatoes
- 7 Bell Peppers
- 8 Sweet Potatoes with 2 Yams
- 1 Head of Broccoli
- 1 Bunch of Celery
One of the best things about diving is the fact that as you take and save items from the dumpster. You can easily give them back without feeling the wasteful nature of throwing away food. What I mean by this is not to waste good food. But in the case where you just don’t want that item when you get back home then chuck it. Don’t just push it into your limited fridge space until it starts to smell funky. Have an idea of what you want to do with it before wasting your time with it.
Canning is becoming a new passion of mine as many times I have had to chuck the overflow of fruits and vegetables. The possibilities are literally endless. With a quick google there are millions of recipes available for any extra produce you find. I have made it a goal to learn how to do it and will update on the processes.
I’m no vegetarian as I love a good bloody steak but that is not what we are looking for. In the world of dumpster diving I keep meat off the menu. The chances of getting sick are just too high and one bad experience like that could turn someone away very quickly from the hobby.
The amount of abundant produce is well enough to fill anyone’s stomach to the brim. And the possibilities of cooking are literally endless. And that is one of the coolest parts of dumpster diving is that the you will have to be creative to be able to cook and prepare the endless possibilities. Some of my favorite recipes are: oven cauliflower roast, yam ginger soups and bell pepper with potatoes hash browns in the morning.
